Medicare is federal health insurance for people 65 and older, younger people with certain disabilities, and people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Medicare is separated into 4 parts:
Your Medicare Plan Options
You get Medicare coverage in 2 possible ways: Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage.
The Original Medicare Plan includes Part A and B. You may also choose a Medigap Plan (Medicare Supplement Plan) and/or a Prescription Drug Plan in addition to Original Medicare. Original Medicare is the default plan under Medicare. You'll receive coverage under Original Medicare unless you choose to join a Medicare Advantage Plan.
Medicare Advantage (MA) Plans provide your Part A and B coverage, cover “medically necessary” benefits, and sometimes include Part D drug coverage. They generally offer extra benefits and lower payments compared to Original Medicare, but many plans require you to see doctors on their approved list. If you join a MA Plan, you will still be in Medicare and have Medicare rights.
